As part of National Lab Day, Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute at Lake Nona invited 30 top 8th graders from Lake Nona Middle School into their labs to extract DNA from strawberries; examine microscopic tissue samples of kidney, liver, skin and intestine and perform other experiments. The goal was to give students real-life experiences in the laboratory to complement classroom learning and encourage them to seek careers in science.
Sanford-Burnham’s postdoctoral scientists designed these lab-based practical experiences including basic pipeting technique-an integral skill in the life of any scientist. “Biomedical science provides an insight into health and disease. I wanted the students to experience the wonders of science from a hands-on perspective and understand the concept of what they were doing. The students were intrigued and I hope they left with a new love for science.” said Dr. Preeti Bharaj, postdoctoral scientist at Sanford-Burnham who led some of the lab work. Dr. Bharaj is conducting research that examines the brain-body connection that controls energy expenditure and appetite within Sanford-Burnham’s Diabetes & Obesity Research Center.
